Buccaneer State Park

Fifty miles from New Orleans, Buccaneer State Park sits on the beautiful coastline of the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Mississippi. Named after pirates that used to visit the area, perhaps to smuggle contraband and bury treasure, Buccaneer State Park provides year-round recreation. The park is set among moss-draped oaks and tidal marshlands. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina completely destroyed the park, however, it is gradually under reconstruction with Phase III scheduled to start in the summer of 2011.
Waterpark
The water park is still under construction. When it is finished it will feature a 460,000 gallon wave action pool with four foot surf and a 700 ft. double water slide that twists and turns down to the pool below and Lil’s Smugglers Cove. It is an ADA accessible, zero depth pool perfect for small children.
Camping
Due to the reconstruction following Hurricane Katrina, the Buccaneer campgrounds is updated with full-hook ups for all of its previous 206 campsites. Electricity, sewer and water hook-ups are now available. Set in a grassy field overlooking the Gulf of Mexico are 70 additional sites with electricity and water services. These new sites are walk-in only. There are also 25 primitive sites set in the back of the Royal Cay campground. These sites have no services, but there is a restroom 200 yards away.
When the final reconstruction is finished, Buccaneer State Park is sure to make a great place for family fun. In addition to the water park, the site features a 1.8 mile nature trail through several species of Oaks and Sweet Bay Magnolias. For the golfer, try Jackson’s Ridge Par 3 Disc Golf course, a challenging golf course for both the beginner and pro golfer. Admittance to the golf course is included in the park’s entrance fee. For exciting outdoor fun, plan on spending many relaxing weekends at Buccaneer State Park.
